Abstract: This presentation focuses on novel approaches to corporate and organizational sustainability. In recent years, the emphasis on sustainable development has increasingly been placed on the individual organisation or company. Corporations are indeed capable of significant impacts, on environmental, social and financial systems, often at a global scale. Corporate Sustainability, also known as Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) focuses on how organizations can transform so as to create value to and be within the boundaries of the natural and societal systems within which they operate. This presentation will initially focus on the cybernetic Viable System Model and how it has been recently used to a) understand corporate sustainability at the organizational level and b) integrate the related tools, frameworks and concepts. Then the presentation will focus on a particular corporate sustainability practice: life cycle assessment and its application to product carbon footprint. Two carbon footprint case studies will then be presented for an olive oil and wine product from Greece. The presentation will conclude with the need to adopt a systems approach to effectively understand and deal with the complex issues pertaining to sustainability at all levels.
